As a Pro-life Democrat, Greg Varner champions a family-centered vision for public justice and the common good.
Abraham Kuyper, a nineteenth-century minister, said “When principles that run against your deepest convictions begin to win the day, then battle is your calling, and peace has become sin; you must, at the price of dearest peace, lay your convictions bare before friend and enemy with all the fire of your faith.”
I have been privileged to have represented thousands of individuals, small businesses, family farms, and local governments in these past many years. While I will continue my law practice, my heart hears a call to duty.
Most of us are increasingly frustrated with the direction of politics. Statesmanship seems strangely absent, as if people have forgotten what that means. The pursuit of trust, stewardship, and responsibility seem to be missing in the halls of Montgomery. Our responsibility to future generations has been sacrificed and we all sense a disconnection between what we believe and the policies that rule our lives.
For this reason, my wife Kelly and I believe that now is the time to make a difference. Ideas that I fear and dread are winning the day, and no one seems able to rally against these forces for the good. I feel within my heart a burning desire to make that difference, to be the voice of reason, to fight for the ideals that made this country great.
It might be said that we are a State with the heart of a church and so we must stand up to be seen and heard.
I do not claim to have all the answers, but I believe I have been equipped with a voice that resounds with “we can do this”. We are now a full decade into a new millennium yet Montgomery needs to hear a sound from a new era, the next generation.
As T.S. Eliot wrote: “Last year’s words belong to last year’s language and next year’s words await another voice.”
I believe I am the other voice for Alabama State Senate District 13.
