According to this study, Alabamians could be missing out on billions of tax credits from earned income. On average, families not claiming the credit would have received a refund amounting to $1,400. While the study focused on California, I suspect its application is consistent with our state.
New research finds California will miss out on more than a billion dollars in economic activity and thousands of jobs that could have been generated by the federal refundable Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC). This is because an estimated 800,000 eligible Californians will neglect to claim over $1.2 billion in EITC dollars this tax season
According to the study, in 2009, about one in five who are eligible will fail to claim their EITC refunds.
